HughesNet “Content Blocked / Invalid or Expired Security Certificate Error” Fix with HN7000s and other HN Series Modems/Routers

Updated 8/1/19: As of now, we have been completely unable to access the HughesNet HN7000s Registration Server page with anything other than Windows 10 and the Internet Explorer browser that is built-into Windows 10.  You won’t see Internet Explorer in the list of apps, but you can search for it on your computer and find it!  We suggest making a shortcut to your desktop in order to access it quickly and easily in the future!   Internet Explorer will still pop up a warning about the site not being secure, but at least it offers you the option of opening the content in a new tab or window and you will have to do that to get to the part where you enter your SAN and PIN to bring your HN7000s modem online!  We have not been able to get around that lately with any other browser and until Hughes fixes it on their end, and we don’t expect that to happen!

Updated 5/28/16:  We are leaving this update posted here in hopes it will work for you!

Some browsers will block the HughesNet Registration & Commissioning Process when trying to browse to the Registration Server due to an
“expired SSL certificate” on the servers at HughesNet.  The error message will be “Content Blocked” or similar, or your browser simply won’t let you continue to the HughesNet Registration Server!  This problem would be easily resolved if they would simply renew their certificate, however, although they seemed to fix this issue for awhile, we noticed on 5/28/16 that the issue was back again!

So, unless you have an older computer with Windows Vista or 98 or even Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 10 or earlier, the registration / commissioning process will be blocked by your browser security.   At least Internet Explorer 10 and earlier offered you the option to continue anyway, but the newer versions do not and Windows 10 added a whole new level of security to the default browser and we have yet to be able to make it past the registration page with the Edge browser or Google Chrome recently!

However… we believe we have found another fix that works for Mozilla Firefox anyway, and we will be testing it soon!
This is the process that we found online and that was recommended to us!  If you don’t have Mozilla Firefox browser, you will need to download it and install it first!

HughesNet Registration “Expired Certificate” block workaround for Mozilla Firefox:

1. Enter “about:config” into the FireFox address bar and agree to continue.
2. Search for the preference named “security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling.”
3. Double-click this item to change it’s value to false.
4. Close Mozilla Firefox and re-run it and go through the HughesNet registration process again!

This process will lower your security as you will be able to view sites with invalid certs. Firefox will still prompt you that the cert is invalid and you have the choice to proceed forward!  You can always go back into these settings and switch it back to “true” after you have completed the HughesNet Registration / Commissioning Process!

Additional Information

Here is additional information about the “old” workarounds for this process with Windows 7 and older operating systems!

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 11 will not work either, since there is an issue with an “Expired / Invalid Security Certificate” on the HughesNet Registration Server and IE11 security will not allow you to “bypass” the issue and continue to the Registration Server!   We’ve tried lowering the security, adding the site to the “trusted sites” and more, but haven’t been able to make it work!  We even back-dated a computer to 1980, and although we made it past one error, the registration process still did not work!

Older versions of the browser, such as Internet Explorer 9, can be found online and installed, and should allow you to bypass the issue by allowing you to click on “Show Content” and continue through the registration/commissioning process.

Make sure you run the file after downloading it!  However, you may get an error that says “Internet Explorer 9 is already installed!”  Many computers already have it installed, but can’t see it or access it due to the newer versions of the browser (IE10, IE11) that are also installed on the same computer!

The trick is to find someone with an older browser or the Safari browser, or we have also found a solution that involves rolling back IE11, to IE10, and then IE10 to IE9… and we know IE9 will offer you the options to “show content” and continue, which is what is necessary in order to complete the process

Rolling Back Your Browser

Here is the process for rolling back IE11 to IE10 and IE10 to IE9 in Windows 7:

  1. Go to the Start Menu, Control Panel, Programs, Programs, and Features, and on the left side column, select   “Turn Windows Features on or Off”
  2. Un-check IE11 and click “Ok”
  3. It will prompt you to restart, but before you do, go back into the same area and select “View Installed Updates” option in the left column and select it!
  4. In the box that pops up, scroll down to Microsoft Windows, and find the update that mentions “Internet Explorer 11”,  then click it and select Uninstall above.
  5. Reboot the computer after that process has been completed!
  6. This should revert you back to IE10 and the IE10 icons should now be on the desktop or in the Start Menu
  7. Repeat this process to roll back IE10 to IE9.

Once you run through registration with IE9, you will be prompted to “Allow” or “Show Content” which will allow you to bypass the security errors and continue the registration process!
